One year of twin schedules

Here it is! The recap of all the schedules we have used for Ali and Sammy in their first year of life.  This is the bare bones basics, mainly eating and sleeping.  Check out the twin schedules page to get more detail on the specific months.  Sometimes transitioning from schedule to schedule can take place over a few weeks.  With this list it is easy to compare months and figure out where to make adjustments for your little ones.

Schedule update: One year old twins and a three & a half year old!

We now have two one year olds in our house!  Ben is cruising along at three and a half years old and busy as ever.  The schedule hasn't changed too much in the past month, but we have made a few tweaks.  The holidays gave us a chance to try a few new things, and I'm liking how we are doing!

Here is our basic outline of the day:

7:00am- Ben up! We spend a few minutes together and get his breakfast going.
7:15am- Ali and Sammy up!  I get them to the living room and nurse.
7:30am- Ali and Sammy play while I make their breakfast.  Ben helps now, which is super sweet. (But means it takes a few minutes longer)
7:45am- Everyone sits to breakfast.  We try to facetime with family during this time.  The kids eat a better breakfast with someone besides me to look at. ;)
8:30am- Done with breakfast, kids play while I clean up.  I try to squeeze in some reading time and play with the kids.
9:00am- Ali and Sammy to first nap.  Ben and I do a one on one activity now.  I choose it and I try to make it educational.  My goal is at least ten minutes of directed activity, but if he is in to it we stretch it a bit.  After that he does his independent play while I get some work and chores done.
11:00am- Ali and Sammy wake up and nurse.
11:30am-1:45pm- This is still our busy time.  If we have early activities we head out to those and then get home for lunch around 12:30 or so.  If we are just doing our own thing we usually do an early lunch.  We go to libraries, parks, and do any errands we might have.  Home time is spent reading and playing with the kids.  We are trying to get as much outdoor time as possible too!
1:45pm- Ali and Sammy nurse and head to naps. Ben gets a snack if we did an early lunch.
2:00pm- Ben to nap.
4:30pm- Everyone is up!  I let them up any time after 4.  Ben is pretty good about staying in his room if he wakes up early, but most days I still have to wake him up.  I try to stretch the girls a bit as sort of an independent playtime.
4:30pm- The kids get a small snack.  I don't like that they eat so close to dinner, but the girls at least cannot make it to dinner without a little something.  Ben usually just gets some milk.  If everyone is happy I will skip the snack.  Some days just a few bites are what keep the girls happy and playing til dinner.  This is when Ben gets to watch a show too.
5:30pm- Dinner time!  We all eat together.  If Pat is working late or the kids are really having a hard time waiting til dinner time I start them off early, but we aim to all eat together.
6:00pm- Family play time!  (And baths on rotating nights.)
6:45pm- Jammie time for Ali and Sammy, then they nurse.
7:00pm- Ali and Sammy to bed for the night.
7:10pm- Ben starts his bedtime routine.
7:30pm- Ben in bed for the night.

As the girls are getting older we can be slightly more flexible with their schedule.  We can shorten their morning nap to get to more activities.  And they are can move their solid meals around a bit if I give them a little snack.  This really frees us up to go more places.  We have also started the slow move toward weaning by dropping the post afternoon nap nursing session.  The girls were not happy to have to nurse then and have been so much happier in the post nap time without it.  As a bonus they are nursing better at the other time of day.  As I said we aren't rushing to wean, but it is the first step!

I've added in the directed activity for Ben and he has been doing so well with it!  It has been great practice for him to have to sit still and do what he is told for a bit.  We do puzzles, crafts, color, work on letters and numbers, and do work on other concepts through play.  I think the special attention helps him keep a happy attitude throughout the day, and we are working on things he will need in preschool.  Ben has also been super into helping out lately.  He loves to help me with any chores I am doing and with the cooking.  It does make things take a bit longer at times, but I appreciate his interest in what I am doing!

This schedule is really working for us right now.  Ben is doing really well with his extra attention, and it makes him so much more patient with his sisters!  The girls are so much fun, playing and getting into everything.  I've added in a planning session every evening too.  Just taking five minutes to jot down the plan for the next day makes everything go much more smoothly.  We deviate from the schedule as needed, but having a game plan helps me make sure everyone's needs are met.

Eleven month update and schedule

Ali and Sammy are 11 months old!  One more month until they are a year old.  Yes, once again I can't believe time has gone by so quickly.  Sometimes these monthly updates are frustrating to write.  They are something else on my to-do list that is always growing.  But then I think about how not writing them means my girls are growing too fast and I am a little sad.  Normal mom feelings though, right?  Right.  On to the update.

Sammy and Ali are still army crawling.  I think they have given up and the traditional crawl.  Sometimes they get up on their hands and knees, but then they realize they can get where they want to go and just go for it.  Sammy is still super fast.  Seriously, she can cross a room in a blink.  Ali is still our slow and steady girl.  She gets where she wants and will figure out the best path to get to what she wants.  The two of them together can be trouble.  They have managed to knock the gate down a few times!  If I don't have it super tight they can tilt it and scoot underneath.  Sneaky girls!  They for sure keep me busy making sure they stay safe.

Both are sitting much better now!  Sammy can get herself into a sitting position on her own, while Ali kneels more.  Ali has been busy pulling herself up into a kneeling position to reach things for a while now.  In the girls usual style, Ali worked hard at it and we could see her practicing to reach this skill.  After that Sammy just did it one day.  It is interesting to see how different the girls can be sometimes!  But they do hit physical milestones around the same time, as expected from identical twins.  The path to those points is just a little different.  Ali tends to kneel more than sit, but she can sit when placed in that position.  They don't do it very long, they tend to take off after the next thing that catches their fancy.  I think they are really just too busy to be bothered holding still sitting for very long.  They are learning they can have hands free upright playing by sitting though.  Oh, and they have learned shelves have fun things on them.  They can't reach anything unsafe, but they can get into a lot more toys now.  One of Ali's favorite activities is pulling all the board books off of shelves.  We keep a big bin of baby toys on a low shelf, and they can pull it over to get to the toys.  It's messy, but it is actually nice they can do this now.  When just Ali was pulling up she would work so hard to grab a toy out of the bin, and Sammy would wait and steal it.  Sisters, huh.

The girls are pretty good eaters.  They've had some more teeth coming in, and that makes them picky about what they eat.  Ali likes softer foods while Sammy prefers hard things to grind into her gums.  Overall I think they are doing pretty well.  Both of them can drink from a straw now!  This is awesome because it means they can drink the smoothies I make.  Sometimes it is the only way I can get veggies in Ben, and I love that I can sneak healthy food into the girls now too.  It took Sammy a little longer to figure it out, which was hard for her because she saw her sister and brother drinking something she wanted too.  But she got it and now all three happily drink down my secretly healthy concoctions.  :)  The girls love bananas, guaca-hummus, peanut butter toast, quesadillas, crackers, apples, yogurt, raisins, and apricots.  They really like having whatever the rest of us are eating.  I am happy that they dig into whatever dinner I make for the family.  I am betting that won't last too long.  They'll find their pickiness like most kids do, but for now it is pretty nice.  And it is helping Ben be less picky too!  Yay!  They adore meal time and are so happy to be at the table with everyone, which is super fun.

Nursing is still going well.  Teething makes them a little fussy when nursing.  Sammy tends to bite a little when her teeth hurt.  She gets put down and has to wait until Ali is done when she does that.  Fortunately she has learned and doesn't do it very often.  It does let me know that her mouth is sore though.  Ali likes to nurse more during teething.  Funny how different they can be!  I just make sure to have her switch sides at feedings when Sammy doesn't want to nurse much to make sure both sides produce evenly.  The girls are getting pretty fast too!  They get to business and want to get back to playing.

Sleep is going well.  Sammy took her turn having some naps and bedtimes she wasn't happy about.  But it was just a handful of times though.  Both girls are happy to get to nap time and crash hard at bedtime.  They occasionally cry out at night, but giving them their pacifier solves any problems.  Sometimes we hear a cry and when we get into the room both girls are sound asleep.  So who knows who is doing that.  They did have a hard time sleeping when we had Gramma and Grampa with us for Thanksgiving.  I seriously think they just didn't want to miss out on fun.  Nothing was wrong.  They would stop crying as soon as I went into the room.  If I picked one of them up they would be straining to see into the hallway.  I think they just wanted to go play.  Other than that no real complaints though!

This month we celebrated the girls first Thanksgiving.  The girls enjoyed themselves.  I thought they would like more of the food, but they were still fussy from teething and didn't eat a ton.  They very much enjoyed having Gramma and Grampa here to visit and dote on them.  They loved the play time and cuddles.  They loved getting out and visiting parks.  When it is just me and the three kids the girls usually stay in the stroller.  They tend to take off in opposite directions, which is hard with just one adult.  And since they are still army crawling I don't want them getting hurt or dirty pulling their bellies along the ground.  With Gramma and Grampa the girls could get out and play at the park! They loved the swings!!  I have to say while it is very strange to have such warm weather at the holidays, it is nice we can still go to the park!!  The girls enjoy the Christmas decorations that are up, and they have liked Christmas shopping with me.  I like this stage when I can buy their gifts with them present. :)

These girls are just the best.  Oh, they can be a handful sometimes.  They get into everything!  Seriously, I don't remember Ben getting into as much as a baby.  Maybe it seems that way because I had just one kid so I could prevent more from happening?  Or perhaps because Ben didn't crawl until he was almost a year old, so he didn't have the opportunity to get into things before he knew better.  Ali and Sammy are smart and learning.  They know what they are not allowed to do.  They are starting to leave the outlets alone thank goodness!  They love to get into the toys.  They are, well, sometimes kind of jerks to each other.  They are constantly stealing toys from each other.  They pull pacifiers out of each others' mouths.  Sometimes to put into their own mouth, sometimes just to have two.  They love to crawl around and explore.  They pull up to kneeling to try to see everything.  They already think it is super fun to try to get into their brother's room.  Luckily Ben doesn't mind right now, but he will. ;)  The girls have learned if they pull up to kneel by the couch they can reach Ben while he sits.  This is a super fun game for the girls.  Ben does not seem as impressed with it.  So far he handles it well, just scooting out of the way.  He is going to have to adjust to a lot of love once Ali and Sammy figure out how to get on the couch too.  Both girls crawl all over each other and wrestle around a bit.  It sounds like they are fighting, but when I say anything to them they just look up and smile.  Silly babies.  Sammy is more likely to be on top.  She tends to take direct routes to where she is going.  Ali takes the time to go around and find the best path that way.  Sammy is still happier to play on her own.  She loves to use her feet to hold one toy while she plays with another.  Ali likes to pull toys and books off shelves.  She has been very happy to play on her own now that she can kneel at things.  Both girls have been obsessed with the baby keys we have.  We do have two sets, but of course they want the one their sister has. (Oh, and that usually means Ben wants them too.)  They love the kids nativity we have out for them to play with.  They are into rings and balls too.  They have created a new game for themselves.  We have a tiny area by the front door that is tile, and the balls from the ball factory bounce and roll really well on it.  They crowd into this space and knock the balls around in a little hockey game of some sort and just laugh.  Pat has been warned to open the front door slowly when he gets home.  Of course the best time to play this game is when someone needs to use the door.

Both girls are just little giggle monsters.  They laugh and smile!  They are still so loud.  Seriously, so loud all the time.  Sammy is the shy one.  She took a day to get used to Gramma and Grampa.  Once she is used to people she opens up.  Ali still loves most everyone.  Sammy is the speedster.  Ali likes to take winding ways to get places.  Ali is still a little freer with her feelings.  She has easy laughs, and will quickly let you know when she is upset.  Sammy takes a beat longer to let loose the big giggles, but get her in a silly mood and there is no holding it back!  She will let you know when she is unhappy too.  Both girls are determined.  They remember things they aren't supposed to get into and lie in wait to get at them.  They keep me busy for sure.  Sammy is into playing with socks for some reason.  Hers or Ali's.  Seriously, she has pulled Ali's socks off to play with them.  For her part Ali doesn't seem to care.  Ali has a specific book she really loves.  It is fun to see their preferences develop.  Both are little sweeties and so much fun.

No major schedule changes right now.  Sometimes they do wake up early from first nap, but they are pretty happy to play in their cribs and giggle together so I just leave them.  Afternoon nap has been bumped a few minutes forward.  We got a little lax and it was creeping back a bit, but they really need to be in nap on time.  As they get older meal times can be a little more flexible, which is super helpful.  They will eat cheerios on the go if we must be out during a normal meal time.  Not ideal, but it tides them over until I can get a proper meal in them.  Here is the usual day this month:

7:15am: Wake up
7:30am: Nurse
7:50am: Solids breakfast
9-11am: Nap
11am: Nurse
11:45am: Solids lunch
1:50-4:15pm: Nurse and Nap
4:30pm: Nurse
5:30pm: Solids dinner
6:45pm: Nurse
7pm: Bed

The one meal that must be on time is dinner.  I start them on their dinner if Pat isn't home yet.  I think it is just that time of day, they are fussy and need to get their dinner.  After that they are usually happy as can be!

Sammy!  The sign only lasted through about 2 pictures.  Oh well.

Ali!

My girls!!!  Samantha and Alison and their lovies.  They adore those lovies!

Ben wanted in on the pictures!  I think this is one of the best one I have of all three.  I adore these three kids.  How did I get so lucky?

Always happy when it is time to eat! (Ali L, Sam R)

Double trouble! (Sam L, Ali R) These two get into mischief, but I love watching them together.

Yay smoothies!  Happy, quiet babies. :)

Sammy, caught int he act!  Stealing her sister's socks.  Ali was too busy getting into things she wasn't supposed to to care.

Sammy and Ali- Best little girls!!!

These are just the sweetest little ladies.  Oh, they can be feisty.  They let you know when they are not happy.  But they are quickly happy again.  Teething has been tough on them, and that is a time when I hate having twins.  Both girls need to be held and loved on, and I am only one mommy.  We make it through though.  Ali and Sammy love to explore and play.  They like to be a part of the action.  They love to giggle and snuggle.  They are just little loves and bring so much happiness to our lives.  Life is busy when you have two babies on the go, but it is so much fun.  I am so blessed to have these sweet girls as my daughters.  They are delights.  I love them so much.

Ten month update and schedule

The girls are ten months old!  We are closing in fast on the big one.  I can't believe so much time has gone by so quickly!  The girls are growing hard.  They are busy and in to everything.  They are little sweeties and we are so blessed to have them in our lives.

Ali and Sammy still aren't crawling on their hands and knees, but they are so good with their army crawling I don't think they care.  They each have their strengths with it.  Ali is our long distance girl.  She is determined and focused.  You have to watch her because she will wait for her moment.  In a total mom fail moment, I have to admit I lost her once this month.  I thought she was playing with Sammy in the living room and I found her playing in her bedroom.  Fortunately our house is pretty safe.  But now I know for sure to keep the hallway gated off.  Sammy is our sprinter.  She is seriously fast!!  Luckily for me she is the one more content to hang out.  But when she thinks she has an opening she is off!  Her favorite place to go is into the kitchen, so she is hard to miss.  I have been employing the gates almost all the time now.  I know it is a little frustrating for Ben to have to ask to get around them, but I need to be able to keep everyone safe!

The girls are good eaters.  Sadly they are getting a little picky already.  I suppose I should be proud of them- they are totally eating at a preschool level. ;)  They are obsessed with raisins and cheerios already.  This comes in handy when we are out and about.  I like having an easy food to take with us places.  I know it isn't necessarily the healthiest meal, but it by far could be worse.  They love bananas, guaca-hummus, and almost all breakfast foods.  They enjoy peanut butter toast.  They are starting to want bigger pieces of food to eat.  I do have to be careful about this, I don't want them to choke.  But if it is a food I think they can handle I let them.  They enjoy drinking water out of their cups and like to try to hold them by themselves.  They look so proud of themselves when they do!  They enjoy almost anything I make in the slow cooker, and they like the veggies out of soup.  Otherwise they are already turning on vegetables, which bums me out.  But they do enjoy smoothies and pouches already.  Oh my, do they enjoy them.  If I get one out for Ben I'd better have one for the girls too, or I hear about it!  I aim for the kids to eat actual vegetables and know they are eating them, but I don't want the table to be a battleground if I can help it.  So I am fully into hiding veggies anywhere I can.  If the girls eat their pouches, I am happy.  It is interesting how different babies can be.  Ben spent his first few years on a self imposed Atkins diet.  He barely liked any carbs!  Both Ali and Sammy already like some breads and crackers.  Even between the girls they have different preferences.  At Thanksgiving Ali was all about the mashed potatoes, while Sammy was digging the turkey.  I love seeing their differences come out!

Sleep is still going pretty well.  Overall I think I can't complain.  They do have the occasional bad nights and bad naps.  They do know the routine though and go to naps and bed happily and willingly.  I think it is normal to have a less than stellar nap every once in a while.  Ali seems to sometimes have a little fear of missing out.  She goes to sleep, but if she wakes at night she seems to want to get up.  She usually goes back to sleep though.  The big issue with sleeping this month was teething.

Teething.  Oh teething, how I hate you.  These poor girls were cutting the front four top teeth all at the same time this month.  They were so uncomfortable.  Understandable it messed with their sleep a little.  It appeared to mess with their eating a little too.  Ali was less in to solids for a bit, and when she did eat them she liked the softer food.  Sammy was the opposite- she didn't want to nurse a lot and wanted more solids.  So again, interesting to see the differences between them.  I am happy that these are my second kids and that they are twins with the nursing.  Sammy had a couple days where she really didn't nurse much at all.  I offered at all the normal times, but she only suckled for a few moments then wanted off.  I remember Ben going through this, so I knew it was normal.  I wasn't worried if she didn't nurse a ton for a day or too.  I was happy Ali wanted to nurse more, so I just made sure to alternate sides that she was on to keep supply up.  Sure enough, Sammy was back to normal in about a day.  The teething meant we spent several days just cuddling and trying to keep the girls happy.  Those were some loooong days, and they were days when having twins was just hard.  When your baby is upset and hurting you just want to hold them, and that is hard to do with two little ones needing to be held and loved on.  But we made it through.  Once teething took a break my little sunshines were back to their happy selves.

This month the girls celebrated their first Halloween!  They weren't super in to their costumes, but they had a ton of fun at all the Halloween activities we went to.  We hit up several story hours at the library.  I like going to those because the girls seem to like the stories too!  It is still easier to keep them in their stroller at that type of event, but they are actively watching the leader and paying attention to what the other kids are doing. I like to think they are getting something out of it.  This month they were great helpers getting some early holiday shopping done.  They enjoy being out and about, even when they were teething.  It is getting cooler here (finally) so the fresh air makes them happy.  The girls got to participate in their first election.  That was a day, but they were there with me to vote!  They finally had their nine month check up, on the day they turned ten months but what can you do.  I hate that but with the move it was the best we could do.  They are healthy and growing strong!!  Sammy is about 3 ounces bigger right now.  It is interesting how they keep switching leads in that.  It is really interesting to watch these identical twins grow.  They have such different personalities, but they physically have so many similarities.  I know, duh, that should be obvious.  But seeing it actually play out right in front of you is fascinating.

Sammy is still our shier girl.  She is fully at ease with people she knows, but she is slow to warm up to strangers.  She took a little time to warm up to Gramma and Grampa at the start of their Thanksgiving visit.  Overall I can tell she is our little introvert of the two.  She is more often content to hang out and play with toys on her own.  She is super fast as I said, but she doesn't take advantage of it too often.  She likes to snuggle up and observe the action.  She's a thinker, and waits for her opening when she wants something.  Currently she appears to be going for the kibble.  She can really turn on the speed when she sees me coming to stop her!  Ali is still our outgoing baby.  She likes to get right into the action.  She will come and find me rather than play alone for too long.  She is quick to voice her feelings.  This isn't all bad, she has the best belly laughs and she doesn't hold them back.  She is determined.  If she wants something she keeps going after it until she gets it.  She is independent, she will go and seek something out, like going to her room to play.  Both girls are thinkers.  They are going to give me a run for my money as they grow.  They already know when they are going for something they shouldn't.  They stop and look at me when I say no, but often go for it anyway, smiling and giggling the whole time.  They love to get into their brother's room and play with his toys.  Of course they like to steal toys from each other.  And no, it doesn't matter if we have two of something, they want what their sister has.  I try to be as fair as possible with that, but sometimes they have to just work it out themselves.  They love to giggle together, which is the sweetest thing to see ever.

There schedule is still holding strong.  They are doing really well with it!
7:15am: Wake up
7:30am: Nurse
7:50am: Solids breakfast
9-11am: Nap
11am: Nurse
11:45am: Solids lunch
2-4:30pm: Nap
4:30pm: Nurse
5:30pm: Solids dinner
6:45pm: Nurse
7pm: Bed

They tumble around each other like puppies.  It is so funny!

Samantha, my little sweetheart

My Alison, always the character

Sammy and Ali!  My best girls

The girls are little sweethearts.  It is so hard when they are teething.  They were really uncomfortable and I sometimes felt like there was just not enough mom to go around.  But it makes me so grateful for their sunny personalities.  When they aren't in pain, they are such little delights.  And even when they are teething they try to have fun and be happy.  They are funny and playful, sweet and snuggly, smart and feisty.  They make us laugh with their antics.  They loving and lovable.  They adore their big brother.  I am so thankful to have them as my daughters.  They are wonderful girls and bring such joy to our lives.

Schedule Update: Nine month old twins (with a three year old too!)

The girls are nine months old!  They are older babies now (which feels like a strange thing to write).  They are past the newborn and early babyhood stages of just trying to figure out nursing and napping.  But they aren't yet starting in on toddler hood.  So while they still need a lot of sleep, they don't just sleep all the time.  Nursing is pretty routine now, but solids mean figuring out new eating patterns.  Add to that Ben is three, meaning he still has a lot of toddler needs, but it rushing forward to his preschool years full force.  That presents some challenges to get everyone's needs met.  Fortunately I think we have found a pretty good routine that works for us.

Here is how our days usually run.

7:00am- Ben gets up.  We get a few minutes of one on one time and he gets started on breakfast.
7:15am- Ali and Sammy get up.  Play for a few minutes while I finish up time with Ben.
7:30am- Ali and Sammy nurse
7:45am- Everyone play while I make the girls' breakfast, my breakfast, and make sure Ben has had enough of his food.
8:00am- Girls have solids breakfast with me.  Ben either sits with us or plays.
8:30am- Done with breakfast, kids play while I clean up.  If it is girls' bath day they get baths.  This is often when we facetime with Meo.
9:00am- Ali and Sammy to first nap.  Ben gets bath if it is his bath day, otherwise he goes to independent playtime.  He does one hour in playtime, then gets to play in the living room.  I get myself ready for the day and get chores done.  We also do our reading time during this time.
11:00am- Ali and Sammy wake up and nurse.
11:30am-1:45pm- This is our busy time most days.  I try to get us out of the house most days, either to the library, the store, the bank, a park.  Really anything to get out.  We move lunch to fit the days outing best.  Sometimes we all eat right after the girls nurse, sometimes it is more like 12:30.  Ali and Sammy have solid lunch with Ben and me every day though.  If we are not out we do playtime at home.  Ben does crafts, reads, plays, or watches a show if I have work to do.  Girls play and read with us.  If we aren't going out for the day, this is my biggest time to play with the kids.
1:45pm- Ali and Sammy nurse.  Ben gets to watch a show.  (This is usually his first show time of the day.  A few days a month I have my work to do and he gets an earlier show.)
2:00pm- Ali and Sammy to second nap.
2:15pm- Ben to nap.
4:30pm- Everyone up!  4:30 is the goal, but if everyone has actually napped well and wake up I get them up any time after 4.
4:30pm- Ali and Sammy nurse.
4:45-5:30pm- Kids play and often get a show.  I prep dinner and try to keep the kids happy, but this is usually the fussiest time of day.
5:30pm- Dinner!  Ali and Sammy eat solids dinner with us.  I will feed just the kids if Pat is working late, then they play while he and I have dinner.
6:00pm- Play time!  Pat is home, and he gets to see the kids.  (He has to leave before they wake up in the morning, so all three adore this time.)
6:45pm- Ali and Sammy jammie up and nurse one last time.
7:00pm- Ali and Sammy to bed for the night.
7:10pm- Ben starts his bedtime routine.
7:30pm- Ben in bed for the night.

I want to note that this is the general guideline for our days.  Of course each day doesn't work our perfectly.  (I sometimes feel a little stressed when I read other mom's schedules, thinking their days run like clockwork all the time.  Our days don't always run perfectly, but this is the plan I try to follow.) Some nights the girls are super tired and go to bed early.  Some nights (like Halloween) we let Ben stay up a little later.  Now that the weather is cooling off we might do an earlier dinner to have time to hit the park before bed.  Meal times can scoot up if I know kids are extra hungry.  We adjust as needed.

As I wrote the middle of the day slot is our most variable time.  If we are going to do a late lunch (like when we have story hour at 11) I do give Ben a little snack to tide him over before we go out.  The girls are still nursing, so that counts as their snack.  If we do an early lunch I know I may have to offer Ben a snack before nap time.  The girls are big enough that we can wiggle the window for morning nap to suit activities if needed.  I can scoot morning wake time and first nap up about fifteen minutes so they wake earlier.  This gives us even more time in the middle of the day.  Afternoon nap rarely moves though.  With all three napping then I try my very best not to mess with that time.

I definitely think having a schedule actually gives us more flexibility.  This structure helps me make sure everyone's sleeping and eating needs are met.  I get a chance to have time to accomplish all the adult stuff we all need to do- cook, clean, work, shower (we all appreciate when I do that. ;) ) I know when I can stretch a little bit because we have our basic routine to fall back on.  And even with a three year old and infant twins we still get out of the house almost every day!

Schedules are a plan for the day.  They grow and change as our kids do.  This is where we are right now and it is working for us.

Eight month update and schedule

The girls have been go go go this month!  They are adjusting so well to out new house.  Moving couldn't have come at a better time- the girls have more room to roam around!

One of the biggest things with the girls this month is how much they are moving around.  They aren't officially crawling yet.  They keep trying to get on their hands and knees, but can't quite do anything from there.  They do army crawl and roll and scoot like you wouldn't believe!  Ben didn't start really getting mobile until close to a year, so I am a bit surprised by how early the girls seem to be doing it.  Of course they have Ben to set an example of what to do.  They also have Ben's toys to motivate them. ;)  They love getting into his stuff.  I fully admit I wish they stayed in one place a little bit longer.  But it is fun that they can get around a bit and play with each other.  They are getting a little frustrated that they can't get on their knees yet, but it will be happening soon I'm sure.  I am happy we set up this place to be super baby safe right away.  These girls are into everything!

The other big thing this month is solids.  We really picked it back up now that we are settled.  The girls had their first solids at six months, but really I don't think they were completely ready yet.  This was actually a blessing, as we got through the move without having to worry about giving them solids on top of everything else.  Now they are ready and super into it!!  The girls have breakfast, lunch, and dinner with us most days.  They are so cute when they eat.  I love these early stages of solids.  The girls are just so happy to be sitting at the table and eating with us, they eat everything!  Of course it is ridiculously messy, but that is expected.  So far they have liked everything we have given them and are doing really well with the self feeding.  We have started giving them a little bit of water with their meals.  (This is important as they aren't eating purees.)  They adore trying to drink the water out of the bottles.  They end up wearing more water than they drink, but it is cute how much they enjoy it.  They currently eat most of their meals in just their diapers, so I don't have a lot of pictures of them eating.  I love seeing them try new foods, and I love that all five of us can sit together at the table at meals!

The girls still babble and frankly yell a lot.  They are so much louder than Ben ever was!  They just have a ton to say and want to be sure everyone knows it!  They are starting to 'talk' to each other more.  They actually look at each other and seem to be carrying on conversations sometimes!  It is so sweet.  I have no idea what they are saying to each other of course, but I love seeing them acknowledge each other.  They still like to play together and steal toys from each other.  Now that they are scooting around they can get into the toys more.  Ben is being pretty good about this.  He doesn't like when they play with some things, but he is learning to share more.

Ali is still the more outgoing of the girls.  She has a quick smile.  She is a bit of a firecracker, even at this young age.  She is quick to let you know she is unhappy.  But she is quick to bounce back to smiling as well.  She tries hard to reach her goals.  She is the one you can see reaching and trying to get on her hands and knees.  She is determined to get what she wants and keeps working until she does.  Sammy is still the quieter girl.  Don't let that fool you though, she is just as determined as her sister.  She makes this little face with her lips pressed tightly together and you know she is working on something.  Her efforts aren't as visible as Ali's, but you can see her thinking then suddenly she can do something new!  She also makes that little tight lipped face when she is trying not to smile.  Between Ali's early feistiness and Sammy's early determined nature I know these girls are going to give me a run for my money as they grow!

The schedule has changed slightly this month.  The girls get up a little earlier.  This is because they just weren't making it to 7:30 anymore.  I had been holding out on moving their wake time because I enjoyed having the early morning time with Ben, but I knew they would eventually be getting up early anyway.  So we went with it.  Of course if they are happy in their beds we wait until 7:30.  We have also added the solids as I mentioned before.  We are fully back in the time where it feels like everything we do revolves around food.  Meals take longer and clean up is way more involved, but we are enjoying it.  Here is the basic run down of the girls' day.

7:15am: Wake up
7:30am: Nurse
8 am: Solids breakfast
9-11am: Nap
11am: Nurse
11:45am: Solids lunch
1:45pm: Nurse
2-4:30pm: Nap
4:30pm: Nurse
5:30pm: Solids dinner
6:45pm: Nurse
7pm: Bed

Eating solids is going great.  Nursing is going well.  They are getting pretty quick at it.  Nighttime sleep is going well.  They crash hard at bed time.  I think that is in part because we have had a couple of rough nap times.  They are working so hard on crawling and they are teething, so I am trying to keep nap times consistent while being understanding of all the reasons they are waking early.  Overall they are doing pretty well though.  I don't want to make any major changes until we get past these big developments.

In other happenings Sammy has her first tooth!  Lower left is through the gums!  The one next to it is working hard to get through too.  Ali almost has her first one through.  I can see the bump on her gums, it just hasn't broken out yet.  Sammy and Ali can sign milk to me!  They have started to use the sign to indicate they are ready for their water at meal times.  I can tell they understand the signs.  They get all excited when I sign milk, and they start rubbing their eyes when I sign tired.  I am trying to use more and all done at meal times, but with three kids eating sometimes I forget.  I am so happy they seem to be getting the signs.  Ben did really well with them , and I really do think it helped curb tantrums when he was younger.  I love seeing them understand and try to let me know what they need!

Ali and Sammy are such delights.  Yes, they are loud and into everything, but they are so fun.  They love to laugh and play with us.  It is so fun to see them interact with each other and their brother.  They are determined, sweet, happy little girls.  We are so lucky to have them in our lives.

These girls are into everything!
Ali!
Sammy!

We love these girls so much!  (Sam (L) Ali (R))

Seven month update and schedule

I am not kidding that this month flew by.  Of course packing up your whole life and moving across the country kind of keeps you busy.  The girls did really well with all the changes. I am so proud of them.  They weren't overly thrilled with all of it.  They are very social little girls and love to have someone talking to them.  The thing is, it is hard to pack while two little babies want you staring only at them!  Fortunately Meo was able to come over and give them the attention they needed.  I am happy to report that despite a chaotic home with packing going on, then sleeping in new places on a three day road trip, the girls have stuck to their schedule and done so well!  They sleep and eat without any real issues.  Go girls!

The girls got into the Olympic spirit!  (Ali left, Sammy right)

The big thing the girls are into this month is rolling.  They are all about rolling from their backs to their fronts.  They love playing on their bellies!  This is a little new to me as Ben was never really into hanging out on his stomach.  I don't really remember him just hanging out and playing that way much at all.  Ali especially loves it.  She was the first to consistently roll from back to front.  Sammy was big on laying on her back with her feet in the air for a long time.  (That was Ben's favorite thing to do.)  Now they are both all about being on their tummies.  Both girls have learned to lay their heads down comfortably.  That seems like a silly thing to have to learn how to do, but it is important!  They can roll both ways, front to back and back to front.  Sometimes they just cry out until I flip them back on their backs though.  I remember Ben going through a stage where he 'forgot' how to roll that way, so I'm not worried about it.  In fact I think it is kind of good.  I don't want them figuring out how to get mobile yet!

The jumper got packed up, so we haven't had much time in that.  They still love their bouncers.  They did get tired of them in the final days before the move.  But there was just too much going on that they couldn't be on the floor as much.  They are bearing some weight on their legs.  They love bouncing on laps.  And they are starting to sit up a bit!  They still need someone right there with them, they tend to tip easily.  But they are on their way!  We did start solids this month.  We haven't gotten too far into it though.  They didn't show a ton of interest.  And honestly I didn't think they fully showed all the signs of being ready.  And that was just fine with me.  Really it was good that they weren't ready yet.  We were so busy packing it was a break for me that I didn't have to worry about feeding them solids.  As we get more settled and they are showing more signs of readiness we will dive back in!

They are just the sweetest little girls.  They are looking more and more alike, but they are so not the same person!  Ali is currently our little outgoing baby.  She loves to smile and gives her smiles away with real joy.  She laughs deeply from her belly and loves looking at people.  She can be quick to get angry, but she is very quick to get over it too.  She tends to be our louder girl.  She has a voice and likes to use it!  She is often the first of the two to try new things.  She loves grabbing toys and works to get them!  Sammy is still a little more reserved.  She has a great smile, but you have to earn it a bit more.  I can tell from the look in  her eyes when she thinks something is funny, but she takes a little longer to give the big belly laugh.  She is slow to get angry, but she can hold a grudge!  Neither girl was thrilled with the road trip, but I swear Sammy took almost a week to really forgive us.  I know it sounds crazy to think a six month old can hold a grudge, but while she would smile at us her eyes still told us she remembered that drive.  She is determined.  She is usually the second sister to try something, but I think she likes to wait to make sure she can do it.  She will work to get her toys too, she is just a little more strategic about it.  The girls complement each other well.  They seem to enjoy being near one another and interacting.  I love watching them play.

No schedule changes this month.  We kept everything as consistent as we could to counteract the major location change.

7:30am: Wake and nurse
9-11am: Nap
11am: Nurse
1:45pm: Nurse
2-4:30pm:Nap
4:30pm: Nurse
6:45pm: Nurse
7pm: Bed

They are doing really well with the schedule!  They stay awake most of the midday period now.  If they are tired they need a little extra attention.  They occassionally catch a nap in the car, but not as often!  We are able to get out some mornings and have them nap on the go, which is a wonderful thing.  We can get Ben to activities and just get things done that can't always wait for the midday awake period.  They don't have a formal independent playtime, but they do spend time with their toys on their own on the floor.  They go to naps and bed readily and wake up happy.  They still nurse well, which is a huge blessing.  This next month we are going to work on building up our new routine in our new town!  I'm going to add in solids more consistently, and hopefully get them into the jumper once it is unpacked.  Ben adored that and I think the girls will too!

Alison!!
Samantha!!
I am so lucky!  (Sammy left, Ali right)

The girls really are a joy in our lives.  While I wouldn't necessarily recommend packing up and moving with an almost three year old and six month old twins, the kids really made it relatively easy.  The girls adjusted well to a changing environment, slept well, and kept up their good spirits.  I just love being with them.  They are so fun, each in her own way.  They are both little loves that just make everyone smile.  I am so so beyond blessed to be their mother.  I don't know how I got so lucky, but I am thrilled I did!

Six month schedule

At six months we are on a great schedule here.  It is really working well for us.  I love the newborn stages for the cuddly tiny babies, but I love this stage for the consistency we get for a few months.  The girls are so much fun right now.  They are really interacting with the world around them and just so happy all the time!  Ben is almost three now (what?!) and just getting more enjoyable.  His imagination is growing, he is joking around with us, and basically lives on goofball island.  Ben, Ali, and Sam get along really well right now.  I am trying to enjoy this as much as possible.  I know once the girls are mobile and getting into Ben's stuff we won't have as many peaceful times.  But every stage with all three just gets better!

Here is an average day for the Team Cartwright kids.

7am: Ben up.  He has milk and then we have breakfast together.  This morning quiet time is something that Ben really seems to enjoy.  He needs one on one time and starting the day with it makes sure he gets his moments.

7:30am: We get Ali and Sammy up.  They nurse while Ben keeps working on breakfast.

8am: This time varies slightly.  It is usually play time with everyone.  The girls get their baths on bath days during this time.  If we are going out in the morning everyone gets dressed and we pack up.  Sometimes we do an early morning park outing.  Family fun basically.

9am: Ali and Sammy go up to first nap.  If it is a bath day Ben gets his bath then independent playtime.  Otherwise he gets a little longer to play downstairs with me, then heads up to independent playtime.  While he is in playtime and the girls are napping I have my get ready time.  I can get some little chores done during this time as well.  (Like cleaning the bathroom while Ben takes his bath.  I love time savers like that!) Or I can do some computer work.

10:30am: Ben gets dressed and we read our devotional for the day.  We sing a couple songs and play in his room.

11am: Ben and I get the girls up!  We all head downstairs and the girls nurse.  Then I get the girls dressed if we haven't already.

11:30am: Lunchtime starts!  Ben and the girls play while I get our lunches together.

12:00pm: Middle of the day is when we often get out and about.  We run errands, go to parks, and visit with Meo and Omi.  Ali and Sammy get catnaps in this time period, or nap in the car on the go.

1:45pm: Girls nurse and Ben gets to watch a show.  I try to make it 'educational,' but admit sometimes it is just fun.

2pm: Ali and Sammy up to afternoon nap.  Ben follows by about 2:15.  Then I get my time to do work, clean up, and enjoy some peace and quiet. ;)

4:30pm: Everyone up!  If all three are still asleep I get Ben up first to help me wake up the girls.  If Ali and Sammy are having a hard time I will get them up after 4 and bounce them a bit to help them go back to sleep.  Sometimes only one girl is having a hard time.  I like to take advantage of that to grab 'sneaky snuggles.'  Whoever is awake and I just cuddle on the couch and get some one on one time.  It's hard to grab one on one time with twins, so I take what I can get.  That usually only happens once or twice a month.

5pm: Playtime while I get dinner going.  This is when Pat is usually home, and the kids love getting some Daddy time in.

5:45pm: Dinner for the solids eaters.  Pretty soon dinner will get more involved as the girls join us!

6:15pm: Family fun!  Sometimes outside, often just in the living room.  We enjoy each other and play.

6:45pm: Bedtime routine starts!  I get them jammied up and we have our final nursing of the day.  We start nighttime prayers as a family.  When the girls are all done eating we sing to them and put them to sleep for the night.  We move into Ben's room to finish up his routine with jammies, brushing teeth, recapping the day, and finishing prayers.  We kind of goof around a bit on this one, so the length of time varies.  We try to get him in his bed by 7:30 though.

There you go, a general day in the life of Ben, Ali, and Sammy!  As the girls have gotten older they have gotten a little more flexible.  They can miss morning nap for an event if needed, but not every day.  They are able to flex their nursing times a little bit, which is helpful if we are out and about.  I try to stay pretty true to nap times and bed times.  (I really hate messing with sleep!)

Nap times shouldn't move too much for the time being.  Meals will start to change a little as we fit in solids for the girls.  I would like to add in a little more guided learning for Ben, but he is doing really well with play based learning, so we will see how that goes.  For now our days work for us, and I love it!

Months 1, 2, and 3 schedule recap

I've started to try to post the schedules the girls use.  I really like reading other people's schedules for their kids.  I like to see if I can be more efficient in anything, and if they have any good ideas I should try to implement in our lives.  It can be comforting during times of mommy-doubt to see that other people are doing things similar to what we are.  (If other people's days look like ours, I can't be the worst mom ever, right?)  It also helps when things are just not working to see what works for others and get some new ideas.  When the kids are little, the schedule is soooo important.  A good routine can be the difference between everyone being fussy and crying all day, and having a great day.  I also know that in the early days of a new baby everything can be so chaotic.  Having some form of routine to follow gives me a sense of control (even though it is usually all in my head), which makes me feel better about our days.

In the hopes of helping out other moms googling away like I have (and probably will do in the future), here are the schedules I used for the girls in their first few months.  These are the bare bones, eating and goal nap times.

1 month old
Honestly, it was still on demand nursing and sleeping.  We had a lot of people coming to visit, so I didn't try to implement anything.  We did have a daily wake time of 8am for the first nursing of the day, and loosely followed a 2.5-3 hour schedule after that.  I didn't let the girls go longer than 3 hours between feedings.  Naps were all in their bouncers and whenever the girls wanted to sleep.

2 months old
8am: Official wake up and nurse
9am: Nap
10:45am: Up and nurse
12pm: Nap
1:15pm: Up and nurse
2:15pm: Nap
4pm: Up and nurse
6:15pm: Nurse
7:15-9pm: Nap and cluster feed as needed
9pm: Upstairs to nurse and into bed
Middle of the night: nurse as needed, usually 2-3 times

3 months old
7:45am: Official wake up and nurse
8:45am: Nap
10:30am: Up and nurse
11:30am: Nap
12:45pm: Up
1:30pm: Nurse
2pm: Nap
4:30pm: Up and nurse
5:30-6pm: Nap off and on in bouncer
6:30pm: Nurse then to bed
9pm: Dream feed
Middle of the night: nurse once, usually between 4am and 5am.
(Around 15 weeks was when we switched from cluster feeds as needed to the dream feed.)

Babywise moms will probably notice I took some liberties with the eat, play, sleep cycle around the middle of the day.  I knew I wanted the girls to nap at the same time as Ben as soon as possible.  In order for that to happen, I set that afternoon nap time and worked nursing around it.  I made the middle of the day nap a shorter one, and did nurse the girls right before the longer afternoon nap.  That middle of the day time is also when we usually get out of the house, meaning the girls got catnaps in the car.  Not always ideal, but it got us closer to the goal of everyone having the same afternoon nap time.

So there it is!  Three months of how we tried to go about our days.  Of course every day wasn't perfect.  If the girls were hungry earlier I fed them earlier.  If they were tired the slept more.  If they really were not having naps I got them up and tried to help them sleep by using the bouncers.  Having a routine helped make those first few months of having twins so much easier.  I knew when they would be hungry, which made being able to get out of the house possible.  The girls also started getting into the rhythm of naps and started taking longer naps.  It takes effort to try to use a schedule, but those efforts are so worth it.  We are already seeing it pay off with good naps and happy babies!

5 month update and schedule

The girls are five months old now.  We are past a lot of the four month old areas I struggle with, which makes me so happy!  I think the hardest part about that stage is that a lot of things just take time to work out.  I like to be able to fix things!  Time works best though, and as predicted things have settled a bit.  The girls are back to sleeping all night.  The early wakings are getting so much better.  Naps are great more often than not.  Eating continues to go well.  I am blessed that these girls seem to be pretty flexible with their morning nap.  This is wonderful because it means we can get out to activities sometimes!  I try to not miss that nap more than one day in a row, and I hope the girls can keep doing so well this way.

Yay! This is about us!
Ali and Sam are doing everything they 'should be' for their age.  They have great head control, do well on tummy time, and smile constantly.  They grab toys and roll over.  They are working on rolling from back to front, which as a second time mom I am not overly enthused about.  They already manage to move enough just by wiggling.  I want all the time I can get before they are mobile! ;)  They for sure squeal and coo.  Man, are they some loud babies sometimes!  They love to grab their toys and play.  They do express displeasure when their sister grabs the same toy they have.  It seems that sibling problem of wanting what the other sibling has starts at birth.  They are always grabbing for the same things!  They can't yet sit without support, but they do very well in their special chairs.  They are no where near pulling themselves up to standing on their own, thank goodness.  Too soon!  Overall they are doing so well!

I remember five months being a wonderful time with Ben.  We had gotten past the four month challenges.  He was on a solid four hour schedule.  He napped well and slept well at night.  He was still just nursing, so there was no need to worry about solids yet.  Overall, it was a fun month for me.  I am hoping the same is true with the girls.  It looks like it will be so far. :)

Here is a quick version of the girls current schedule.  I would like to note they probably could go longer between feedings in the afternoon.  However, I am prioritizing having them nap at the same time as Ben.  This means I need to feed them before they go down for their afternoon nap.  I feed them again after to try to keep the eat, play, sleep cycle.  It also gives a little more time before bed.  I for sure want them to eat right before bedtime still.  I think five feedings will be the lowest we go for now until solids take up more of their meals.

7:30am: Wake up! Nurse
9-11am: Nap
11am: Nurse
2pm: Nurse
2-4:30pm: Nap after done nursing
4:30pm: Nurse
6:45pm: Bedtime routine, nurse, and then straight to bed.

There is a large gap of time between the 11am nursing and the 2pm nursing.  This is a long time to go without a nap.  We often go out during this time of day, giving the girls a chance to grab a catnap in the car.  If we are home I let them get a short nap during this time as well.  Like I said I want all three kids napping in the afternoon at the same time, so this allows for that.  I know this doesn't exactly follow the Babywise plan, but hey, it works for us.  It isn't ideal to have the girls napping in the car, but Ben needs to get out and have fun too.  The girls adjust to work into the family just like we adjust to fill their needs.

I love these little girls so much.  I am so blessed to have my sweet Ali, Sammy, and Ben.

4 month schedule

I know I've only done this baby thing twice, but each time four months has been a bit of a challenge.  The frenzy of the newborn time has passed.  The baby starts to spend more time awake and no longer just sleeps anywhere and everywhere.  Wake times get longer and suddenly we have more time to fill.  This is where I think the schedule gets serious.  And just when I am really wanting to get our routine even more solid, we are hit with sleep regressions, growth spurts, mental leaps, teething...  You get the gist.  It's a busy time!  I remember this being the time with Ben when I was frantically googling sample schedules to figure out what to do with all of this.  I am so happy I have more experience this go around as the girls were already on a decent routine.  It isn't completely perfect.  Babies change and grow so fast at this age it can be hard to keep up!  But it is working for us.  So I thought I would toss my current four month old schedule out there into the interwebs and I hope it helps at least one other mom out!

Sammy and Ali- 4 months old!

(I want to note this is just for the girls.  Ben's schedule weaves around in there too, but that isn't my focus today.)

7:30 am: The girls wake up.  Either I let them finally get up, or I wake them up.  They have their first nursing of the day.  After they eat I get them dressed.  Sometimes we head out shortly after they get up, for playgroup, to go to the park, or some other errand.  Otherwise they get to play with their mobile.

8:50-9am: They head up to their first nap of the day.  It varies in exact time based on what I am doing and how tired the girls seem.  They nap for about two hours.

11am: I wake the girls up.  If they are already awake they can get up as early as 10:45, but I try to keep them in bed til 11.  The girls nurse, and we get ready to head out for our activity of the day.

11:30-1:30pm:  This middle of the day time is where we have the biggest variance.  It is the one time of day we consistently get out and about.  So while the girls could do another set nap during this time, we don't.  If we are home, they get a catnap in their cribs or bouncers.  (And by catnap I mean about half an hour or so.)  If we are out they doze in the car and on the go.  This middle of the day nap is one of the early ones to not be needed anymore, so I have chosen not to stress on it.  It happens if and where it will.  I do try to pay attention to their sleepy cues and give them the chance to rest as they need it.  Beyond that this is when we play, practice sitting up, have tummy time, that sort of thing.

1:30-2pm: More playtime.  If we are out I aim to get home between these times.  This is usually when the girls chill in their bouncers while I get Ben into nap time.

2pm: Another nursing session. The time between feedings gets shorter and shorter as the day goes on.  This is in part because babies tend to just do that.  It also happens so that it works into the rest of the family's activities better.  I have found it easier to feed the girls a little earlier than try to stretch it out and have them fussy from hunger.

2:30-4:30pm: Afternoon nap.  This is my time.  All three kids are in naps.  We don't have a proper eat, play, sleep cycle before this nap, but my goal is to have a time in which all three kiddos are napping.  The timing just didn't work out any other way for this to happen than to feed the girls both before and after this nap.

4:30pm: The girls get up.  They eat again. It is only two and a half hours after they ate, but it works better to feed them early, rather than have them hungry during dinner time.

5-6:45pm: More playing.  The rest of us have dinner.  In the nicer weather we try to get outside a little if we have time.  Otherwise it just family time.  The girls may practice sitting up more and have more tummy time.  This is also a more laid back time where we get to just cuddle them more.

6:45-7pm: Get ready for bed.  The whole family heads upstairs and I nurse the girls while Pat gets Ben through his bedtime routine.  Then we all do prayers together on the big bed and say goodnight.  The exact bedtime varies depending on how long the girls eat.  Usually they are in bed by 7:30, but if they are still eating I'm not going to stop them at a certain time.

9:30pm: Deamfeed and back to bed.  We dropped this feed at 19 weeks.

After the girls go to bed they are pretty good about sleeping through til morning.  We are still dealing with the early wake a little bit, between 5 and 6.  They babble to themselves and each other.  They eventually fall back asleep until the desired wake time, but for a while it was getting to be too much.  Dropping the dreamfeed seems to have really helped them sleep better during this early morning period.  They still wake up once or twice, but they are much better now.  They are quieter and fall back asleep faster.  I think they just need a little time to get all the way past that early wake.

There you go, an average day in the life of a four month old.  Pretty exciting, huh?  ;)  Of course not every day goes perfectly.  Some days we have things like playgroup or appointments that mean we are out during designated nap times.  I love being a second time mom because those things don't throw me as much.  I still try to protect nap times as much as possible.  (Protecting feedings is easy- the girls don't let me miss their meals. :P) I really think consistent eating and sleeping times are so important.  And even at this young age I can see a difference in behavior when the girls are well rested compared to when they haven't had good naps.  They are such happy girls when they have had a chance to sleep!!  It is worth the sacrifices to put their sleep first.  Being a second time mom I also have the benefit of seeing Ben thrive with a consistent routine.  All the work to get naps sorted out it worth it!

I hope this helps some other mom out there, frantically googling like I was a couple of years ago. :)
