Toddlersizing

On Christmas Uncle Jared decided to try out Ben's technique for staying in such good shape.  We call it Toddlersizing.  The main idea is to just never stop moving.  Even when watching your all time favorite movie- Toy Story.

It looked like Uncle Jared was a good student!  I'm sure he'll be in awesome toddler shape in no time. ;)

You can see them in action here.

Parenting: just about done

Ben, like all toddlers, seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. Every day he has new words and new skills.  I swear pants that fit him last week don't fit anymore.  He is definitely growing up fast.  A few recent developments have led me to think Pat and I are almost done parenting this kid though.  Which is good, we have two more on the way.  Here is why I think that.

One:  A couple of weeks ago we were hanging out in the playroom at church.  Ben took a piece of pizza, put it on a plate, and popped it in the microwave.  True, it was plastic pizza and not a real microwave.  But still, he has the basic idea of how to make food for himself.

Two:  He knows how to go up to Omi and ask for quarters.  Surprisingly I did not teach Ben this skill.  It appears to be some sort of instinct.  Yes he is only asking for quarters now, but that can segue into larger amounts with no problem.

So overall, Ben has the main idea of how to feed himself, and can ask his grandfather for money.  Yep, our job is almost done. :)

I suppose he still needs me to drive him around though.  Eh, we'll keep him around a little longer.  Hopefully he can teach his sisters his awesome life skills.

Thankful Thursday: The girls

I know, it has been forever since I've done one of these.  This time of year is super busy for everyone.  We are getting ready for Christmas, which means shopping, wrapping, baking, and the likes.  I am doing some year end wrap up for clients, and getting paperwork figured out for some changes with online tutoring company.  Add to that running around after a toddler.  Oh, and preparing for the girls!  So I haven't had a ton of time for posting.  But in the middle of all of this we have been blessed with so much for the girls and Ben.

I was fortunate enough to have a sprinkle for the girls at the beginning of December.  Pat and I weren't expecting one.  Ben is only two and we have been hoarding our baby stuff knowing we wanted another child.  But I was so happy and had so much fun with the sprinkle.  It was great to see so many friends, and honestly yes, it was wonderful to receive so many gifts for the girls.  But most of all it meant so much to us to celebrate these two babies.  These girls are a joy and a blessing, and I feel so lucky to have so many people ready to welcome and love them.  As lame as it sounds, I really think that is the most important thing you need when having a child- lots of love around you.  It can be hard to have a new baby.  Sleepless nights, constant feedings, general worries and unknowns of a new little life.  But knowing that you have the love and support of your friends and family make it so much easier.  I think all moms just want to know their babies are loved by others in the world.  Along with this has been a huge outpouring of love for Ben.  He has gotten big brother gifts and all sorts of attention while we get ready for the girls' arrival.  I am so grateful that he hasn't been forgotten in all the excitement.

So today I am thankful for all the love and support we have gotten and continue to get as we embark on this new journey as a family of five.  We still have several weeks before the girls arrive, but it helps so much to know all the love they need is already here.  Thank you to all of our friends and family.  Pat and I are so thankful.

Some holiday activities

It's almost Christmas!  The time is really flying by.  We have been busy with getting ready for the holidays and the twins arrival, but we have found some time to have some holiday fun!   Sadly I have been a bit of a picture taking slacker still.  In my defense a lot of these activities are at night and it is too dark for any of my pictures to turn out.  And honestly, I am trying to enjoy every moment we have with Ben as our only child, so I am trying to really be in the moment and not get distracted by trying to take pictures.

At the beginning of the month we went to our town's Christmas Walk.  It is a wonderful evening where they close down the main street and fill it with all sorts of vendors and Christmas fun.  We started at the American Legion for some yummy fish fry.  We checked out the church's nativity display, saw the horse drawn carriage rides, and watched the silent parade.  (That's where the fire trucks are decorated in Christmas lights and go slowly down main street.  It sounds a bit creepy, but it is really pretty.  Ben loved just wandering around and looking at everything.  And he was a trooper!  It can be a bit of walking to get to see everything, but he kept at it.  As he gets older he'll be able to participate in more activities.  This year he enjoyed the playground and dancing to all the Christmas music.  His favorite part though, was the ice sculptor.  It is fun to watch a giant block of ice turn into something else.  This year the theme was Mickey Mouse.  Oh yes, you can imagine how excited Ben was.  He ran right up to the giant ice Mickey and gave it a big hug and kiss.  He just loved hugging it and touching it.  And this is a giant piece of ice!!  Fortunately for us, it wasn't too cold a night.  It was hovering right around 40, so I wasn't worried that his lips would freeze to the Mickey.  At least I wasn't too worried. ;)  It was the highlight of the night for Ben

Mickey Mouse!
We have also recently gone to our library's Christmas night.  I normally love this activity because Santa is there.  They do a great job of having activities for the kids to keep them busy.  Plus, you get a number and they only call a few numbers up at a time, so the kids aren't stuck waiting in line forever.  We were very disappointed that Santa didn't come to the event this year!  Ben didn't seem to mind, and I am betting he didn't even notice.  Honestly I'm not sure Ben would be willing to sit with Santa, so far he seems to be pretty scared of things like that.  But as a mom I wanted that picture.  We still managed to have fun with the other activities though.  Ben's friends from his play group were all there.  We listened to a choir sing carols and got to play jingle bells along with them.  Ben liked sorting through the various craft supplies, despite not actually wanting to make any crafts.  Overall we had a lot of fun, despite missing Santa.

Listening to the singing and eating cookies
Sitting with Daddy
Daddy 'helped' with this craft
This past weekend the church close to our house had a live nativity this past weekend.  As it was almost 60 degrees out, we thought it was a great excuse to take an evening stroll and check it out.  It was cute, and Ben enjoyed the live cows and sheep that were there.  I don't think the actual Christmas story has fully sunk in for him yet, but we tell him about it.  He was all about the balloons the kids could get afterwards though.  We didn't hang out too long, but it was fun for Ben to be out a little later and to run around with some other kids.  I don't know if we will make this a family tradition, but we did enjoy it this year.

Throughout all these activities we have been watching a ton of Christmas movies.  Pat and I adore all the ones we remember from our childhood.  The Grinch, Charlie Brown, Mickey.  We love re-watching them every year.  It just gets to be more fun as Ben starts to enjoy them!  Of course he likes the Mickey ones the best, but he is coming around to the others.  The one thing still really left on our Christmas fun list, besides Christmas itself, is getting to see Santa.  Pat and I keep going back and forth on whether or not we will.  Like I said, I think it is really more for my sake that we would do it, Ben doesn't care either way.  He knows who Santa is, but I don't think fully connects that to getting presents or Santa coming on Christmas Eve.  We do have one good picture of Ben with Santa from this year.  There was a blow up Santa at Christmas Walk.  Ben was really excited about it, and I told him he could go give it a hug.  This was a bad plan, as Ben basically tackled the blow up.  And, as most people would have guessed but for some reason I didn't, the blow up was not sturdy.  Yes, Ben almost took out Santa.  Luckily it bounced back and was fine.  Mom fail on that one though.

Running to tackle Santa
Despite wiping out a blow up Santa, the holiday season has been a good one.  I am so happy we have so many great free family activities in our area.  We are very lucky.  I am looking forward to the rest of the holiday season!!

BFBN: Bringing home baby: Goals for the first four months- Guest Post

It's a BFBN Day!  Today I am lucky to have Stephanie from Giving it Grace posting here.  She talks about her plan and goals for bringing home her second baby.  I am all about prepping for the girls to arrive, and I love that she has weekly goals to focus on.  This post has really helped me.  I'm going to work on my own goals for the girls as well!  I'm over at Wiley Adventures today talking about the basic Babywise principles I make sure to follow on holidays.  Be sure to check out all the BFBN ladies for some great information and tips!

Bringing Home Baby

When I was preparing to bring my second baby home, I sat down and wrote out a list of goals to help me get through the first four months (and beyond). The goals below are what I focused on, and having these decided ahead of time was very helpful! So if you're planning on bringing a baby home soon I think you'll find this helpful. Enjoy!

{ WEEK 1 }
goal: full feedings
Every baby is a sleepy nurser to some degree, so keeping a baby awake enough for a full feeding can be a real chore. Be prepared to really put in work. Ideas for keeping awake: change diaper, undress baby, gentle tickle, something cold briefly against their foot, sit them up. Once baby wakes from nap, start feeding right away as that is when they are the most rested and have energy to feed. If you have older kids, plan ahead for a family member to take over the bulk of your responsibilities with the older kids for several days (even a week!) so you can put all the energy you can find into full feedings. I focused on this from the first feeding with both my babies and they naturally fell into a 2.5-3 hour feeding routine within 24 hours.

goal: full naps
This is really easy at first, because baby spends something like 20 hours a day asleep. If baby is awake he will most likely want to feed, so try to respect baby's nap needs. Put baby down to sleep in a safe place for his nap, or if you're planning to nap with baby or wear baby in a carrier for their nap get into position at the start of the nap and don't disrupt them until it's time for another feeding (or they wake and want to feed).

    { WEEKS 2 - 4 }
By now your milk should be in (if you're breastfeeding), and baby has likely fallen into a 2.5-3 hour feeding schedule with 8-9 feedings within 24 hours. Baby may have even condensed night feedings as they start to take more milk during the day. So the next goals are:

    goal: eat wake sleep
As baby starts to spend a little more time awake toward the end of the first month, start to implement eating, wake time, and then nap - in that order. These are called "cycles". It's ok if every cycle doesn't go in that order, but make this the goal. Avoid nursing to sleep unless it's a middle of the night feeding. Start keeping notes of when your baby eats, is awake, and sleeps. This will come in handy when looking for changes in eating habits, assessing wake time needs, and keeping track of how many total hours of sleep baby is getting within a 24 hour period.

    goal: day vs. night
Babies are born with their days and nights mixed up. Make sure daytime feedings are done with the lights on and/or in a room with natural light coming in. The more daylight exposure during wake time, the better. At night time, keep feedings dark and boring. Dim lights, no chit-chat, minimal eye-contact. Just a snuggly feeding, and then back to bed. Put baby to bed for the night after the feeding that falls around 7-8pm; any feedings after that time should be considered nighttime feedings and should be boring. A word about nighttime feedings: some people put their baby to bed after the 7-8pm feeding and then don't feed again until baby wakes for a feeding. Others sneak in and offer baby a "dream feed" between 10-11pm. A dream feed is done in the dark and the baby is woken just enough to take a feeding and then placed directly back in the crib after the feeding. Then they let baby sleep until he wakes naturally in the middle of the night for a feeding.

    goal: pause
At this age, consider pausing a moment when baby cries during sleep. If you've given baby a sufficient feeding, changed diaper, burped, and put baby down to sleep in a safe place - chances are baby is just making some normal noises during sleep. Pause - and listen. Get to know the different cries your baby makes. Pausing will be super easy if you have older kids - most of the time you will have to pause before responding to baby because you'll need a moment to secure your other kid(s) before ducking into baby's room to assess his needs.

      { WEEKS 4 - 12 }
goal: work toward progressing through newborn sleep hierarchy
The newborn sleep hierarchy is: baby sleeping when she should, in her own bed (or swing or rock n' play is okay too), and falling asleep on her own. Start out with baby sleeping when she should, and fight to get and keep baby sleeping during desired nap times. Then work on baby sleeping in her own bed for most of her sleeps. Then work on her falling asleep on her own (put her down drowsy but not asleep). Don't worry about moving on to the next stage until the previous stage is the norm. It's a work in progress, so don't expect it to happen quickly or remain the norm. Two steps forward, one step back. Keep trying.

      goal: sleep routine
Consider transitioning baby to sleep most naps and nighttime sleep in their room (per the newborn sleep hierarchy above). Implement a routine that is done before each sleep. It can be very simple: dim the bedroom lights, close the curtains, diaper change, sleep sack or swaddle, sing baby a song while gently rocking to the point of drowsiness, and then place baby in their preferred sleeping place (crib, swing, rock n' play, etc) and then leave the room. Even if baby wakes a few moments later and refuses to sleep anywhere but your arms, all is not lost. Every time you do the sleep routine is one more chance you give baby to understand how the sleep routine works.  Side note: we always start black out curtains at this time - and our black out curtains are just an extra sheet hung over the blinds behind the curtains to block out light.

      { WEEKS 12+ }
goal: get through 4 month sleep regression
After the 3 month mark I just work on maintaining the status quo until the 4 month sleep regression has passed. My only goal for the 4 month sleep regression is to not introduce new sleep props. I do not try to break baby of any "bad" habits during the 4 month sleep regression. So - if at 3 months baby will only nap or sleep in the swing, but baby is taking full naps and sleeping well in the swing - then the swing stays until the 4 month sleep regression is over! After the 4 month sleep regression, begin working on getting rid of sleep issues that will not work long term.
Two articles I like that have to do with 4 month sleep regression:

      goal: wean from "dream feed"
If you are doing a dream feed (the 10-11pm feeding), you'll want to think about weaning baby from this around this time if your baby has dropped all other nighttime feedings. My preferred method for weaning is offering only one side for a week, and then dropping cold turkey. If bottle feeding, just reduce the bottle size.

      goal: transition out of swaddle
Somewhere around 4 months old you'll likely want to stop swaddling. Baby is probably working on rolling over soon, and the startle reflex is mostly gone. Even if baby loves the swaddle, once they start rolling you'll have to ditch it anyway so might as well start now and be done with it by the time baby starts rolling.

        { MOM GOALS }
These are the priorities I focus on for myself the first 3 months after bringing baby home:
        • milk supply: extra pumping session, managing oversupply, nursing issues, etc
        • health diet: lack of sleep and poor diet is a lethal combo for your emotional stability
        • water: if breastfeeding, 8 ounces with every nursing session
        • physical healing: let those birth wounds heal!
        • say "no" to literally everything: ignore texts, don't return calls, maybe don't even check your email...there is nothing more important during this time than getting yourself, your baby, and your family stabilized
        • no additional chores: if you have older kids, this will almost take care of itself because you will literally have zero time for anything extra and will care 0% about doing any chores
        • rest whenever you can: duh - but seriously, do it
        • establish routines and rhythms: as dad prepares to go back to work, do a practice day where you see what it will be like without his help, and if you have older kids try to sit down and map out what your day will look like so there is some semblance of routine and calm for all the kids and you know where the trouble points will be (maybe the kids watch a little extra TV during this season so you can work on those full feedings with baby)

        { A FEW OF MY FAV PRODUCTS }
Hudson Baby Swaddle Blankets (way cheaper than aden + anais!)
Soothies (for sore nipples during early breastfeeding)

        Perks of working for family

There are a lot of perks to working for family.  A big perk is having a boss who understands why we are late to work some times.

Yesterday, Ben and I walked out of our house to something amazing.  A giant truck sitting right in our front yard.  I'm not entirely sure what it was doing, but it was big and therefore super neat to Ben.  We did the only thing we could do- sat on the porch and watched it for a few minutes.

I texted Omi, who of course understood our delay.  Fortunately we weren't too late.  But Ben loves trucks, and I loved seeing his joy.

        Big truck!!

        A thrilled little guy
Thanks for understanding and accepting our excuse, Omi!

        Thanksgiving

Pat and I normally alternate holidays with the family every year.  I know it isn't perfect, because it means we don't see one side at every holiday.  But, well, it's what we have to do when we both like our families and the two sides live 9 hours apart.  This year was supposed to be an Arkansas Thanksgiving.  Sadly, I was advised not to travel 9 hours away at this point in the pregnancy.  It was frustrating, because really I feel pretty good.  But I did understand the doctor's point that it was a long drive, some of it through rural locations.  We didn't want to be stuck in an emergency situation far from home.  Fortunately, Gramma and Grampa made the drive to come see us instead!  Yay!

Ben had a blast.  He adored that Gramma and Grampa where there to play with him.  Of course he had them watch Toy Story and Mickey Mouse with him.  We actually didn't go out and do much.  The whole point of the visit was to spend time together and enjoy family time.  And we succeeded in that.  We had a blast hanging out with Gramma and Grampa.  Pat and I are so thankful they took the long drive to come see us!

As I spend the majority of the visit enjoying yummy food and family, I was kind of a picture slacker.  But here are a few I did think to take.

        Ben with Gramma and Grampa!
        We did Christmas early too
Ben loves books!  He loved his gifts.
Water break while Gramma helps open the presents.
Yay!  Crayons! (I'd better stock up on magic erasers;) )

Playing with Mr. Potato Head.  The favorite gift!  Thank you Aunt Lindsay and crew!
        Playing with Grampa.
Adorable new Christmas jammies and a Ben who is not pleased to have his picture taken.
We had a great Thanksgiving and a great early Christmas with Gramma and Grampa.   And an additional thank you to Aunt Lindsay, Uncle Chris, Charlotte, Joe, and Ella for the lovely gifts they sent up!  You were so generous and kind.  We are so lucky to have such great family.  Now to just figure out a way to get us all closer together all the time...

        Twin update: 29 weeks

I haven't posted about the twins very much, so I thought I would do a little update on how they are doing.

I am in the 29th week right now.  I know, kind of a random number week to be posting on, but I had a growth ultrasound yesterday so it seemed like a good time.  Being this far along is pretty good.  Of course we want the girls to stay in and get bigger, but in general survival rate jumps to something like 95% after the 28th week.  So yay for that!  I know in life anything can happen, but I like having that kind of number on my side.

As I said, both girls are growing really well!  There is no sign of twin-to-twin syndrome, which can be a concern in twins that share a placenta.  Basically in that, one twin gets significantly more blood flow and therefore nutrients than the other.  There really isn't anything you can do about it, but it helps to be prepared at delivery if we know it is happening.  And we would want to know if one twin was in distress for any reason.  Fortunately, both are currently just barely under 3 pounds.  They are still basically the size they would be if there was only one baby in there.  This is awesome for their growth, but it means I already almost have 6 pounds of baby in me.  So yes, I do look like I am 9 months pregnant already.  I have gotten a few of the 'any day now' comments.  No, not any day now, more like two more months.  At least we are hoping for two more months!

Currently we are looking at the girls being born towards the end of January.  We of course hope they stay in there as long as possible.  The longer they gestate the better developed their lungs will be, the easier it will be to feed them, and the bigger they will be.  Bigger babies tend to sleep better, and I really value my sleep, so some of my motivation for wanting this is selfish.  But all around the closer to 40 weeks they are born the better.

A big change from when I was pregnant with Ben to this pregnancy is how often I have to go to the doctor.  Because they share a placenta, I get to go in for ultrasounds every two weeks.  Every other is just a quick fluid check.  The other is a longer measurement check.  It is nice to get to see the girls so often, and I remember wishing I could see Ben more while he was on the inside.  With him we didn't have any ultrasounds after the anatomy scan at 21 weeks.  To be honest though, going that frequently takes a bit of the thrill out of it.  I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but after the initial few minutes where we see that yes, they are indeed just fine, it gets pretty routine.  And when you consider that these ultrasounds are in addition to my regular appointments with my OB, it really adds up.  That is a lot of time away from work and a lot of time to get someone to watch Ben.  I take him with me to the appointments that are supposed to be fast.  He is so good at the fast ultrasound appointments.  He of course charms the nurses and the doctor.  He has requested that we turn Mickey Mouse or Toy Story on the big tv we see the girls on, but sadly they only get the 'baby picture channel' as one tech called it.  I am so grateful that Meo and Omi have been so willing to watch Ben during the longer appointments.  It is so nice not to have to worry about entertaining a two year old while getting an ultrasound that can take over an hour.  Fortunately my doctor is less than 10 minutes from the office, so no one really has to disrupt their day too much.  Ben still comes to the office as usual.  True, he watches a bit more Mickey than he probably should so work can still be accomplished.  But let's be real, he's going to have more screen time than recommended while we all adjust to being a family of five.  Everyone I have talked to about having your second, and especially your second and third together, says this is normal.  Once we settle into a routine we'll back off of it again.  I think Ben will be just fine.

From here on out we are just trying to make sure the girls stay in and keep up the good work they are doing.  Fortunately I haven't had any problems or complications.  The only 'complication' is, well, there are two babies in there.  I am so happy to still be feeling really good.  Oh sure, I'm a bit slow and take longer to get up.  But really that is nothing too new. ;)  Of course the one thing I keep being told is to rest and not lift anything too heavy.  Hmmm... rest and not lift anything with a two year old around all the time... yeah, not so much.  :)  Fortunately my doctor is understanding and pretty much told me she doesn't tell moms not to lift their children unless absolutely necessary.  In her words, what mom isn't going to pick up their child if the child needs it and the mom is able?  Luckily Ben is pretty easy going, and we started cutting down on some of the holding and carrying as soon as we found out about the girls.  He has adjusted very nicely to walking more.  I love that he is in the stage where he loves to help out.  I definitely take advantage of that when I drop something. :)

We still have a bit of setting up to do in the kids' room to finalize everything.  Grampa helped Pat put the cribs together when they came to visit for Thanksgiving. (Thank you, Grampa!)  I have to organize the girls' clothes a bit, rearrange the room a little, and hang up the pictures.  Yes, Ben's Winnie the Pooh pictures are still on the wall in his old room.  This means Pat and I are sleeping in a Winnie the Pooh room right now.  That's going to change soon.  Overall I feel we are doing well on preparations.  Pat and I took a class titled 'Surviving Multiples.'  It had a lot of good tips for feeding and burping the girls, which is my biggest concern.  With everything else, well, we know they don't need that much.  Some warm outfits, diapers, and a place to sleep.  (The bassinet is ready to go!)

Overall we are very excited for the girls to arrive.  I do want them to stay in and get nice and big.  We are getting close to the home stretch.  I know there is still plenty to do before they arrive, but I think we will get it all done in time.  This pregnancy has flown by compared to Ben's.  I think that is mainly because of how busy we have been.  Plus having Ben around is a nice distraction from just sitting and thinking about the babies.  This Christmas season is going to be super fun, and will help the time go by quickly.  I plan to fully enjoy this final time we have as a family of three.  I know life is just going to get better with the addition of our sweet daughters, but I want to remember and savor this special time we have when Ben can be our total focus.  I am enjoying these final weeks of pregnancy.  But come the end of January, I will be ready for my new babies to make their appearance.

I guess long story short- 29 weeks.  Babies doing well.  :)  Hopefully they will stay put for another 7-9 weeks!

        Toddler stand off

        Dear Toddler,

We appear to be in a standoff.  Things might get worse before they get better.  They have already escalated quickly.  I understand.  You're angry.  You're a little scared.  You aren't sure how this is all going to play out.  Let me help you.  I know how this is going down.

First of all let me tell you that we want the same thing.  What do you want?  You want your sock back on, and you want your pants on.  I really do want the same thing.  I know in your mind this is all my fault.  You didn't ask to have your diaper changed. I did that to you.  The only way to defend yourself was obviously to take off your sock and throw it at me.  Here's the thing- that doesn't scare me.  True, I have a known hatred and disgust for used socks.  That does not include yours though.  I clean your poop every day.  I have caught your vomit in my bare hands.  The fact is very little coming from you can disgust me enough to not deal with it.  And your socks are still tiny and cute.  No one is scared of them.

The thing is, you've over played your hand.  You keep showing me your bare foot and crying.  You point to your naked legs and complain.  I have what you want- the sock and the pants.  Yet you refuse to come near me.  You have nothing to negotiate with.  I am sitting in front of the only exit to the room.  All your toys are outside this room. Your sippy, your snacks, your freedom.  All of this lies through me.

I am no longer going to negotiate with you.  I know how this all turns out.  You want me to chase you down and make this a game.  What you failed to take into account is that I am seven months pregnant with twins and already sitting down.  I can wait you out, no problem.  I suggest you look at the facts, accept that you have lost this battle, and let me put your sock and pants on you.  No one needs to end up in time out over this.  I don't want that, you don't want that.  Let me help you.  Give up this losing fight and we can all go about our day.

        Your move, Toddler.

        Love,
        Negotiator Mommy

        The usual weekend outing

This past weekend was the usual drill- nice day, get to the park to walk around and enjoy it!  I am so glad we did, seeing as it is supposed to snow tomorrow.  We decided not to go to our usual state park, and instead hit up one that is a little closer to home.  It's good to change it up sometimes.  And honestly we were lazy and didn't get moving until pretty late in the day.

Things were pretty ordinary on this particular outing, so I won't go into too much detail.  The pictures are cute and tell the story pretty well.  It was a lovely family outing.

I am so glad we got at least one more outing this fall.  I am hoping for more, but we'll see how the weather holds out.  We are all so excited for the girls to arrive this winter, but I know I'll miss these special times as a family of three.  I love that Ben can reach up and grab both his parents hands.  I love that he has our full attention.  (I also love the simplicity of only worrying about one child ;) )  Soon enough though I will be loving being a family of five!!

        Shooting hoops!

A couple of weeks ago Ben and I were out for a walk.  We sometime go to the school across the street to play on the playground there.  This particular day, we got lucky and found a couple of balls left out.  I decided it was a good time to teach Ben how to play basketball.  I actually played basketball for several years when I was younger, even making the high school team for a bit.  Granted all that really means is I do actually understand the basic rules and skills needed to play the game.  It by no means implies that I am good at it, or still have those skills.  I like I think I can teach Ben a thing or to about it though.

Since he is new to the game, and the ball almost comes up to his waist, I decided to go right to shooting.  I know ball handling is important, and defense wins games.  But scoring is fun.  The first hoop we tried might have been a bit too high for Ben though...

Slight height difference between Ben and the basket...

Ben gave the ball a good heave to get it up there, but it didn't quite make it.  I thought about holding him up to dunk, but then realized I'm not that tall either.  Fortunately the school has a couple of smaller hoops as well as the full size ones.

I think Ben still needs a couple of inches to really get into the game.  He had a lot of fun throwing the ball and chasing it around.  I have to say I love this age Ben is at.  He clapped for me any time I made a basket.  He really knows how to make his mom feel good about her athletic abilities (especially with the belly right now!).

He's still so tiny compared to the hoop!

Ben had fun chasing the ball around.  I had fun pretending to be an awesome basketball star.  (I mean, how fun is it to have a short hoop?  I feel like a rock star when I play)  I hope Ben gets enjoyment out of sports when he is older.  He doesn't have to be the best or super competitive, but the joy of the game is something I know Pat and I hope to pass on.  Of course if he doesn't that is fine too.  Until then I am going to enjoy letting him think I have skills well beyond what I actually do.  ;)

        General silliness

While I miss the times when Ben would sit still for me to take pictures of him, I do enjoy the random fun action shots I can get now that he is a busy toddler.  Here are a few of the fun shots I've grabbed in the past week or so.

We had some cooler days, meaning we had to switch the awesome hoodie for a regular coat.  Ben was a little less than thrilled with this.  What helped?  The amazing monkey hat.  Here he is running through the office, happy as can be to be wearing his monkey hat.

Omi has been cleaning out some stuff from the storage room at the office.  He managed to unearth a little toy called a tonette.  Yep, it's basically a slightly smaller, worse sounding recorder.  (Do they still make kids play those in elementary school?)  Ben loves it.  Fortunately he can't make a ton of sounds on it yet, and he does have a short attention span for it.  I think it will stay an office toy.  Unless somehow it mysteriously ends up at Meo and Omi's house...  I have gotten a few personal serenades since Ben got it.

Oh, the rough life of a two year old.  Every morning I am sure Ben would rather be playing downstairs with his toys, or watching tv, or really doing anything other than wait while I finish getting ready.  But being two, well, there is no way I'm leaving him alone for very long.  Lucky for me Ben has many ways of amusing himself.  This one happens more often than you would think.  Why not put a laundry basket on your head?  He thinks it is hilarious every time.  I have to say it makes getting ready for work a bit more fun.

I never know what sort of silliness will happen yet.  But I'm glad I get to be there to see it.  And I am also thankful for camera phones that let me capture this stuff.

BFBN Week: When to make changes to your baby's schedule

Today we have a guest to the BFBN posting for us!  Katrina from Mama's Organized Chaos is posting for us about when to make changes to your baby's schedule.  I think babywise is awesome at providing a guideline for setting up schedules and making transitions with your baby.  But every baby is different.  I know Ben held on to naps longer than babywise said he would, and longer than some of my friend's children.  He needed that sleep though, so we followed his cues to dropping them.  Katrina points out some signs to look for to help know when to tweak and full out change the schedule.  Check out her post for some great tips.

Next week I'll be back to posting fun Ben pictures and stories, so be sure to check out all the great blogs we've had this week!

        BFBN Week: Sensory play

Our next blogger for today is Carrie from Wiley Adventures.  Kids love to explore the world around them using their different senses.  Carrie has some great ideas for how to really focus in on specific senses through play time.  I am going to try some of these ideas with Ben!

BFBN Week: Ideas for success with independent play

Today we have two bloggers highlighted to talk about play!  The first is Stephanie from Giving it Grace.  She has some great tips to implement and work with independent play.  It can be hard at first, for both the child and the mom.  But she has some great suggestions and real life experience for how she worked through it with her son.  Be sure to check it out!

        BFBN Week: Homemade toys

I love being able to fashion toys out of items around the house.  Honestly, kids love to play with the 'real thing' sometimes more than their toys.   I think it inspires creativity and allows me to save some money. If they break or get worn out, I don't really care.  Most are easily replaceable.  A final plus is it allows me to be more creative when we are out and about.  Every so often we find ourselves out somewhere with nothing for Ben to play with.  Being able to scrounge up something safe and fun can be a lifesaver.  Here are some of my favorite 'toys' from around the house.

        1)  Tupperware.  I think this is one every mother knows about.  Ben loves playing with Tupperware.  He can match up different lids.  He can stack them.  He can put different things into them and dump them out.  It's plastic, so no worries about breaking them.  And even if he did, Tupperware is relatively cheap and can easily be replaced.  I love this option around the house because if we are away from home and find ourselves without toys I can always ask if they have Tupperware.

        2) Old food containers.  I take anything- sour cream containers, large yogurt containers, oatmeal canisters- clean it out, and hand it over for Ben to play with.  It has all the same advantages of Tupperware.  The big difference is that I don't have to take this toy back when I need to store leftovers.  :)  Old Kleenex boxes are great for storing small toys and pulling them out.  Egg cartons can be little nests for small toys.  When Ben was younger I put scraps of cloth in them for Ben to pull out as well.  He loved it.  Bigger tubs can double as drums, stacking toys, and sorting cups.

        3) Boxes.  You can see here how much Ben enjoys boxes.  (They aren't just for cats.)  When he is a little older we'll let him color and decorate them.  But for now just sitting in them is super fun.

Besides just cleaning out containers and handing them to Ben, I've used a few household items to create toys for Ben.  Sadly I don't have sources for most of these.  I have to say they are not all my ideas, and a lot of them came from the wonderful Ms. Cindy who used to work at our library.  She moved several months ago, but we miss her!

        1) Shape sorter.  A lot of shape sorters can actually be frustrating for little kids.  If the shapes aren't lined up exactly right, the pieces often don't go through.  An alternative is to take a coffee can with a plastic lid, and cut a small x in the lid.  Then get some plastic golf balls or ping pong balls.  That's it!  I got the golf balls at the dollar store, 12 for $1.  Ben loves it!  And he has for some time.  At first he liked just watching us pop the balls in.  They make a fun sound as they hit the bottom of the can.  Now that he is bigger he likes popping them in himself.  The great thing about this toy is it stores the balls in itself.  Over time the x will spread out, but we just put a new lid on the can and it is ready to go!  With just the plain x on top, other toys fit inside too, making it even more fun for Ben.

Ben couldn't resist playing while I was trying to take pictures. :)
        2) Coffee can bank.  Yes, another coffee can toy.  We drink a lot of coffee. ;)  Instead of cutting an x into the lid of this one I cut a little slot.  Then I gave Ben a bag of pennies, nickles, and dimes and let him go nuts.  I have tried to work on sorting the coins and counting, but he really just likes dumping them out and then putting them back into the slot again.  If course any bank could be used for this.  The coffee can is nice because it is big and easy to open and close.  And again, it makes fun sounds when you plop the coins in.

        3)  Egg carton color sorter.  This is another one that takes about 2 minutes to put together.  I took an egg carton and colored little dots in the bottom of the cups.  Through this I am trying to work on colors with Ben.  Sure, most of the time he just puts anything he can find in them.  But I have found that the single piece mega blocks fit perfectly into the egg cups.  They offer a several colors to work with and practice naming.

        4)  Egg carton straw toy.  I found this one on pinterest.  I took an egg carton and poked little holes in the underside of the cups.  Ben can take colored straws and put them in and out of the holes.  At first he was just able to pull the straws out, but now he can insert them himself.  It's kind of an ongoing abstract art piece.  An alternative to this is to use pipe cleaners and a spaghetti strainer.  Same idea- poke in the pieces and then pull them out again.

        5)  Oatmeal canister ball drop.  I started this one by just taping paper towel tubes to the wall.  Ben would then take some puff balls (Dollar store find again!) and drop them down the tube.  Well, it quickly became he would drop anything he could cram down it in the tube.  I decided to try to make something with a little bigger hole.  I cut out a square from the base of the oatmeal canister.  I used this cardboard and taped it on a slant at the bottom of the canister so balls would use it as a ramp out of the hole.  (I put some wadded newspaper under it to give more support.)  This allows balls to kind of shoot out the bottom a little more.  He still tries to cram things down it that don't fit, but he loves playing with it!

All of these can be made cute with some construction paper and time, but I usually don't bother with that.  I like that they are easily replaced and that Ben loves them.  Real toys are great, but it is so nice when I can pull something together without spending much, if any, money.  I hope these ideas encourage other people to see what they can create for their kids too!

And of course check out all the bloggers this week!
